Thinking Outside the Box
According to Dr John Philpott, Chief Economist at the CIPD, Financial Services is leading the UK out of recession. Addressing the Association of Executive Recruiters recently, John pointed out that, whilst all economists differ to a degree, the majority of forward-looking indicators suggest that the UK jobs situation is set to grow, but at a substantially reduced rate to what we have seen over the last 9 months. Our experience to date indicates that, while we are certainly seeing a few more roles coming up, companies are cautious and appointments require a lot of care. It’s clear that those companies still around are leaner and fitter than they were when the recession started, but money is still tight and there are clearly challenges coming down the line. Any additional spend has to be considered very carefully and it is always a question of balancing the requirement against cost. The key considerations appear to be pay-back time and risk. It’s time to be imaginative.
